David is now on MySpace!
In an effort to network on a new level with fans and other musicians, David joined MySpace in February 2007.  Since then, he has enjoyed connecting with many brothers and sisters across the world who know Christ, and many who don’t yet know Him.  In the process of expanding his "friends" network, David has had many so-called “Christians” ask to be his friends.  Some of these people (teens, especially) have had profanity and inappropriate content on their MySpace.  David does not appreciate the mixed message that a “Christian” on MySpace sends when they post swear words, sexual references, and inappropriate content.

You may notice that David’s friends list is more in the hundreds than in the thousands.  This is because David is selective about who joins his friends list.  He values quality over quantity, and appreciates the chance to be connected to those who want to honor the Lord with their words.

Think about this…if someone swears out loud, the people around them hear it, and then the words are gone.  But if someone posts a crude comment on their MySpace or someone else’s, it’s like swearing permanently, worldwide.  Pretty lame, huh?

For these reasons, David has created a policy for his MySpace.

David’s MySpace Policy:

  • If you ask to join David’s “friends” network, David will look carefully at your profile.  If it has profanity or inappropriate content on it, including crude comments posted by your friends, he will deny your request (even if he has to accept it temporarily in order to view your profile.)

  • If you join David’s “friends” network and later post inappropriate content in your bulletins, you will receive one e-mail warning from David.  After this, if you post additional inappropriate content, you will be deleted from David’s friends list.

  • If you join David’s “friends” network and post inappropriate content as a “comment” directly on David’s MySpace, you will be deleted immediately.

Why is David so fanatical about this? He believes that our lives (and our MySpace) may be the only exposure to Jesus that some people will ever have.  If seekers (or Christians) see profanity or inappropriate subject matter on someone’s MySpace who also claims to be a Christian, they may wonder if all Christians hold that standard.  In a word, it’s hypocrisy.

The Bible speaks very clearly on this subject:

  • Ephesians 4:29 says "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."
  • James 3:9-10 says “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness.  Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing.  My brothers, this should not be.”

If you are a Christian, please consider very carefully what you post anywhere on the web.  You could be making a huge impact, for good, or for bad, on someone’s faith.  People who you may never even meet are watching!
